Adapting a classic movie into a TV show is usually a trap that leads to cheap, soulless knock-offs. But the 90s cartoon 101 Dalmatians: The Series went a completely different route. Instead of trying to copy the original movie's magic, it fully embraced the weirdness, mixing the charm of a kids' fable with the chaotic energy of a Saturday morning cartoon. One of the smartest things the writers did was shrink the focus. Rather than trying to juggle 99 puppies, the show zeroes in on a core crew: Lucky (the fearless TV addict), Rolly (the always-hungry one), Cadpig (the tiny New Age guru), and Spot (a neurotic chicken who really wants to be a dog). This lovable group gives the writers plenty of room for great character development and hilarious everyday conflicts. Reinventing a classic villain is always risky, but the way they updated Cruella De Vil is brilliant. They dropped the creepy obsession with puppy fur—which would have gotten old fast on TV—and turned her into a ruthless, greedy corporate tycoon obsessed with real estate. She's the ultimate 90s satire, playing both an eccentric billionaire and the "annoying neighbor," which makes for some incredibly funny moments. On top of that, the show’s writing is surprisingly sharp. It never talks down to kids, delivering fast-paced humor, pop culture parodies, and fun running gags. It’s a great mix of visual comedy for younger viewers and subtle jokes for adults, often breaking the fourth wall and getting wonderfully weird. To match all that chaotic energy, the show ditches the sketchy, gloomy London vibe of the 1961 film for bright colors, wacky backgrounds, and bold geometric shapes. It’s a purely expressive cartoon style that has actually aged really well. But despite all the quick jokes and crazy situations, the show never loses its heart. It perfectly captures that cozy 90s Saturday morning feel, wrapping up sweet lessons about friendship and belonging without ever feeling preachy. Ultimately, 101 Dalmatians: The Series is a brilliant, underrated spin-off. By taking bold liberties with its villain, art style, and main cast, it proves that the best way to honor a classic is to give it a fresh, exciting new voice. Do yourself a favor, pull it up on Disney+, forget about the comparisons, and just enjoy this hilarious, nostalgic ride.
